Updates on Current, Emerging and Prolific Munitions added to METIS

This Fenix Insight report updates customers on some of the new technical records recently added to METIS, highlighting some of the new information that METIS users can access.

GERAN-2 SMALL FRAGMENTATION MUNITION

RUSSIAN BOMB

CURRENT, EMERGING, PROLIFIC

The Geran-2 ‘Small Fragmentation Munition’, its true designation unknown at present, is a Russian Federation-developed, aerially-delivered, high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) bomb that is carried and released by the Geran-2 one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicle (OWA-UAV), which may also be referred to as a kamikaze or suicide drone. The fuzing is reported to be random delay action.

OSINT recorded by Fenix Insight on 29 Nov 2025:

"A least three Russian “Geran-2” ( Shahed) strike UAVs that attacked Vyshhorod yesterday dropped fragmentation submunitions in the city streets."

W86 SMOKE

CHINESE MORTAR BOMB

CURRENT, PROLIFIC

The W86 is a Chinese-developed, 120 mm, nose-fuzed, bursting white phosphorus (WP) smoke mortar bomb round.

OSINT recorded by Fenix Insight on 30 Nov 2025:

"Security forces uncovered last night an arsenal buried near Jabab, on border with Suwayda province. The cache included around 80 mortar shells and 2 Malyutka anti-tank missiles. Interior Ministry says the weapons were intended for smuggling to "outlaw groups", a term used to describe Hijri-affiliated fighters - thwarting an operation of that kind is a first."

BM-35

RUSSIAN DRONE

CURRENT, EMERGING

The BM-35 is a Russian Federation OWA-UAV, which may also be referred to as a kamikaze or suicide drone. There is currently limited information on this UAV, with it having been misidentified as the ZALA Italmas for a period of time, and similar to the Geran-1 and Geran-2 when viewed at range. However, the nose-mounted ‘puller’ engine design makes this unique in comparison to many other designs.

OSINT recorded by Fenix Insight on 22 Jul 2025:

"That video of the drone just missing the car was one of three attacks being reported by Sumy regional council. It's just been announced that one person has died in the latest strike. Two other civilians have been injured"

HEAT P1 MK1

PAKISTANI PROJECTILE

CURRENT, PROLIFIC

The Pakistani 40 mm HEAT P1 Mk1 fin- and spin-stabilised, anti-armour (high explosive anti-tank [HEAT]), rocket-boosted round is presumed to be a clone of the Soviet-era-developed, Russian Federation, PG-7V round, or the Chinese equivalent, the Type 69 HEAT.

OSINT recorded by Fenix Insight on 01 Dec 2025:

"Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacked Pakistani Forces in Angoor Adda in South Waziristan. As a result militants captured a Pakistani  MG1A3 machine gun, P1 Mk1 (PG-7P) anti-tank rockets and China-made  Type 69-1 Anti-Tank rockets."

GOLALEH

IRANIAN DRONE

EMERGING

The Golaleh is an Iranian-developed jet-powered OWA-UAV. It is closely-related to the Shahed-136/131 and Shahed-238, however is reported to be newer and was first displayed in February 2025.

OSINT recorded by Fenix Insight on 20 Feb 2025:

"IRGC kicks off major Eghtedar drill in eastern Iran. The drill, codenamed Eqtedar-e Payambar-e-A’azam (The Authority of the Great Prophet) 19, kicked off at the permanent prayers ground of the provincial capital city of Birjand on Thursday."

WW90B

CHINESE MORTAR BOMB

CURRENT

The WW90B is a Chinese 60 mm, nose-fuzed, fin-stabilised, high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) mortar bomb round, which uses a variable propelling charge system. Though occasionally marked up as a WW90A, the bomb is referred to as the WW90B by NORINCO and Poly Technologies. Both companies list the actual WW90A as a longer and heavier bomb.

OSINT recorded by Fenix Insight on 20 May 2022:

"The Group inspected military materiel recovered by the FARDC on 30 and 31 May 2022 in the area around Tchanzu, where there was heavy fighting between the FARDC, supported by MONUSCO, and M23/ARC."
