A previously unseen booby trap fitted to TM-62Ms in Ukraine designed to counter flipping during clearance operations

  • A booby-trapped TM-62M (Ru:ТМ-62М) has been displayed in Ukraine

  • The booby trap sits under the common MVCh-62 (Ru: МВЧ-62) fuze

  • It consists of:

    • An upper and lower electrical contact

    • Two electrically-connected ball bearings

    • A battery

    • An electrically-initiated detonator

  • The flipping of the mine during typical clearance operations causes one ball bearing to align with the upper contact

  • The flipping back of the mine causes the other ball bearing to drop in line with the lower contact, while the upper is held by a magnet to form the circuit

  • Power is provided from the battery to the detonator, causing it to function independently of the MVCh-62

  • There is no clear self-destruct and the battery is likely to remain operational for a long period
